Folding Trailer Covers
Folding trailers are not often built to be aesthetically pleasing. They are not lived in, they are a piece of utility, a means for transporting something altogether more important such as a motorbike. This is perhaps part of the reason why I was surprised when I realised that people sold folding trailer covers. Folding trailers also cost considerably less than RV s, for which covers are more often bought. With the average folding trailer costing just a few hundred dollars, and average folding trailer covers costing between fifty and a hundred bucks themselves, I felt compelled to ask the question: do folding trailers really need folding trailer covers? Obviously, if the answer was “no” then this article would probably be too boring to bother writing – the answer is yes, and the remainder of this article is about the reasons why.
Folding trailer covers may cost a fairly high percentage of the cost of the trailers themselves, but are invaluable for those who would like to keep their folding trailers in good working order for many years to come. If you're storing your folding trailer out of doors or even in an uninsulated garage, protecting against moisture and rain is essential in order to prevent rust for as long as is physically possible. Protection against moisture is one of the most important features that folding trailer covers offer, as oxidation can only occur in the presence of water as a chemical reaction – rust is a consequence of allowing metals to remain damp for long periods of time. No matter how well treated, painted and protected your metal is, if you want decades of use out of your folding trailer then folding trailer covers are a good investment, possibly saving you a few hundred dollars ten years down the line.
Another contributor to rust is when the finish, or the paint of your folding trailer wears away or cracks due to excessive heat (natural thermal expansion), dust being blown at it, or hail. Without folding trailer covers, these things will slowly chip away at the protective coating on the metals, increasing the likelihood of rust over time. To combat this, you want high quality polypropylene based folding trailer covers which keep the rain out whilst allowing the trailer to breathe and dispel excess moisture and condensation from the inside, out.
Finally, for those of us who like to turn out well in public, it would be a bit embarrassing to be driving your all-new Jeep Commander SUV, whilst dragging along a sun-faded red-turning-pink folding trailer on the back. Sun damage is notorious for vehicles that are stored for long periods out of doors, and this will include your folding trailer. As a result, folding trailer covers are purpose made in order to prevent this type of damage by preventing the UV rays of the sun from baking your folding trailer, and wearing away the colour and finish.
Overall, if you're likely to be keeping your folding trailer for years, decades, centuries to come then you'll need folding trailer covers to prevent the natural effects of oxidation from wearing down and eventually breaking your folding trailer.
